The opening panel, titled “COP29 and Azerbaijan’s Contribution: Climate Change, Climate Finance, and the Efficient Use of Resources,” addressed pressing global and national issues.
Moderated by Huseyn Huseynov, Head of the Sustainable Development and Social Policy Department at the Ministry of Economy, the discussion highlighted Azerbaijan’s strategic objectives in sustainable development and the progress made in the lead-up to its role as host of COP29.
Distinguished speakers included Elnur Soltanov, deputy minister of energy and chief executive director of COP29; Nigar Arpadarai, member of the Milli Majlis and UN high-level Climate champion; and professor Levent Kurnaz, a leading climate expert from Boghazichi University in Turkey and author of Circular Economy. The panel offered multifaceted insights scientific, practical, and theoretical on climate-related challenges and Azerbaijan’s evolving leadership in this arena. Speakers addressed critical topics such as climate finance, existing structural and policy-related barriers, and strategies for more efficient resource management. They also reviewed Azerbaijan’s notable achievements in climate finance negotiations during COP29. Emphasizing the far-reaching implications of the summit, the panelists remarked that the outcomes of COP29 will yield benefits not only for the region but also for even the most remote parts of the world. In terms of the decisions adopted and the quality of engagement, they concluded that Azerbaijan’s presidency of COP29 stands among the most impactful in the history of the conference.
