The First International Scientific and Practical Conference on “Current Issues in Engineering and Applied Sciences” (ICCPEAS 2025) has officially commenced at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC). The event is being held in cooperation with Middle East Technical University (METU) of Turkiye, Ufa State Petroleum Technological University (USPTU) of Russia, and the Physics-Technical Institute (PhTI) of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.

Delivering the opening remarks, UNEC Vice-Rector for Science and Innovation, Professor Rovnag Rzayev, noted that, during a period marked by the development of Azerbaijan’s non-oil sector, engineering-oriented research has gained special strategic importance. He emphasized that the primary purpose of the conference is to discuss the results of fundamental research conducted in high-technology fields, assess their applicability to the real sector, and establish a new scientific platform that contributes to sustainable economic growth.

Professor R. Rzayev further stated that nearly 600 abstracts from 27 countries, as well as from 48 higher education institutions, research centres, and industrial organizations in Azerbaijan, were submitted to the conference. Following an evaluation process, 350 abstracts have been selected for presentation. Selected papers, after expert review, will be published in the “Advances in Engineering Research” series of Springer’s Atlantis Press, and in journals indexed in Scopus, including UNEC JEAS and the Uzbek partners’ “Applied Solar Energy.”

Co-Chair of the Conference, Professor Ramil Bakhtizin of Ufa State Petroleum Technological University, highlighted the significance of the conference as an important platform for the discussion of contemporary global engineering challenges, and conveyed his best wishes for a productive event.

Vice-President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, academician Dilgam Taghiyev, delivered a keynote intervention in which he addressed the growing importance of scientific inquiry in responding to modern global challenges, the transformative impact of technology on higher education, and UNEC’s substantive contributions in this sphere. He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the conference would provide a new impetus to the development of engineering and applied sciences.

At the event, academician Vagif Abbasov, Director-General of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes; Professor Adil Garibov, Doctor of Chemical Sciences; and Ilgar Nuri, Deputy CEO of Veysaloghlu Group of Companies, underscored the advantages of the diverse scientific environment created at UNEC in the fields of engineering and applied sciences. They emphasized that such conferences play a crucial role in advancing science, promoting the exchange of new knowledge, and bringing researchers together.

The conference continued with thematic panel discussions aligned with its core subject areas.

This international event, held with the support of BP Azerbaijan and the Veysaloghlu Group of Companies, will conclude its proceedings on 29 November.
