Dr Nargiz Hajiyeva, the Chair of the UNEC Women Researchers Council and a young political scientist, has become the first Azerbaijani to receive researcher status at the Institute for Research on Women & Gender (IRWG) at the University of Michigan, representing the UNEC Women Researchers Council. (Link) This accomplishment facilitates both the local and international recognition of the UNEC Women Researchers Council’s researchers and paves the way for enhanced collaboration with the institute.

Founded in 1995, the IRWG operates as an independent entity within the Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of Michigan. The Institute’s mission is to support and foster research on women, gender, and sexuality at the University, particularly through interdisciplinary approaches. Its research vision spans the humanities and social sciences, as well as the creative and performing arts and the sciences, embodying an interdisciplinary approach and broad inclusivity.

IRWG provides direct financial support for research on women, gender, and sexuality, especially for projects that are collaborative and interdisciplinary in nature. The Institute actively promotes scholarly dialogue and events related to women, gender, and sexuality to both the University community and the public, thus encouraging intellectual engagement and outreach.

In the near future, the UNEC Women Researchers Council (WRC) and the IRWG at the University of Michigan will jointly organize significant events, which will further strengthen collaboration between the two institutions and open broader opportunities for women researchers.
