Characteristics of the Credit System

The organization of education under the credit system in higher education institutions is governed by the “Rules for the Organization of Education Under the Credit System at the Bachelor’s and Master’s Levels in Higher Education Institutions, Basic (Undergraduate) Medical Education, and the Master’s Level of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences,” approved by Decision No. 348 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan on December 24, 2013.

A credit represents a unit of measurement for the time allocated to mastering a particular subject. A student is deemed to have earned credits for a subject upon receiving a satisfactory grade based on the cumulative results of current and interim assessments. The teaching process organized within the framework of the credit system is distinguished by the following features:

• Each student possesses an individualized study plan and actively participates in its preparation.
• The curriculum ensures freedom in the selection of courses, instructors, and academic advisors (tutors).
• Tutors are integrated into the educational process.
• Opportunities are provided for students to engage in independent academic work.
• A multi-point grading system is utilized for assessing academic performance.
• Teaching groups are restructured each semester based on the selected courses.
• The mobility of students and faculty is facilitated.
• The duration of education is contingent upon the student’s academic achievements.
• Faculties, departments, specializations, courses, instructors, and students are assigned specific codes for organizational purposes.
