An event was held at UNEC on March 31 with participation of the academic-teaching staff on the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.

After commemorating with a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Armenian atrocities, the vice-rector for Administrative and Organizational Affairs of UNEC   Assist. Prof.  Shaig Asgarov informed the event participants about the genocide policy carried out by aggressive Armenian nationalists in our country about two hundred years.  The speaker, who reminded the chronology of the genocide policy against the Azerbaijanis during the national revival period, said that the scale of the atrocities and crimes committed against our people caused the astonishment and anger.

Emphasizing the special significance of the National leader Heydar Aliyev’s decree of 26 March 1998 on “The genocide of Azerbaijanis” in commemoration of  the genocide by our people, Shaig Asgarov noted that all the tragedies of Azerbaijan in the XIX-XX centuries were accompanied by the invasion of their lands and genocide policy conducted in a planned and deliberate way consisted of different steps as it had been shown in a historic document. The enemy has consistently carried out military, ideological and organizational measures in order to realize this disgraceful idea. The centuries-old history of our people has been brutally distorted, our nation has been expelled from its historical lands,   the history of Armenians has been aged and exaggerated.

The video was presented at the event, demonstrating the genocide tragedy. The film demonstrating Armenian   genocide touched upon the issues like the mass housing of Armenians in our historical lands after the separation of Azerbaijan as a result of the war between the former Russian Empire and Iran, the massacres committed by Armenian dashnaks with the help of Tsarist Russia and Bolsheviks in 1905 and 1918, our territories being given part by part to Armenia,   the deportation of our compatriots from Armenia by the decision of the Soviet government in 1948-1953.

It was noted that in the spring of 1918, Armenians in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba, Garabagh, Lankaran, Ganja, Zangezur and other regions and also Stepan Shaumyan and his allies committing ugly dashnak policy under the Bolshevik mask committed atrocities against the Azerbaijanis, killed more than 70,000 innocent people with special cruelty, turned   the villages into desolation, drove inhabitants out of their homes. The Armenian armed forces destroyed 229 villages in Baku province, 272 in   Ganja , 115 in Zangezur and 157 Garabagh villages. Dashnaks in the 1918-20s killed 565,000 Azerbaijanis in Western Azerbaijan with unprecedented brutality.

Professor Vekil Hasanov, the head of the Department of “Humanitarian disciplines”  in his presentation titled “Historical facts about the genocide of 1918″ and Abbas Seyidov, Professor of the Department  “Humanitarian Disciplines” gave the information  on historical facts of the genocide , in the report titled “Genocides against Turkish-Muslim population in Anatolia and Southern Azerbaijan”.

It was noted that by March 1918, Armenian militants had destroyed 199 villages of Iravan, Surmeli, Echmiadzin and Yeni Bayazid  provinces  of  Erivan  gubernia and brutally killed 135,000 Azerbaijanis living there. The number of Muslim refugees in the Erivan gubernia  had been around 150,000. Armenians committed genocide of 1918, using political tensions for their own chauvinistic   purposes.  This movement of Armenians started in Baku in 1918, as in 1905. The massacre of 1918 was carried out more mercilessly than 1905th. According to the Emergency Investigation Commission, about 11,000 peaceful civilians were killed in Baku. In an article published in 1933 in Munich it was noted that on March 31, 15 thousand innocent Turks were cut off.  One of the regions that suffered from Armenian violence in March-April 1918 was Azerbaijani villages of Shamakhi province. In 53 villages of Shamakhi, Armenians killed 8027 Azerbaijanis, of whom 4190 were male and 2560 were women and 1277 were children.

At the end, it was noted that the massacres of March genocide and the Armenian aggression against our people mustn’t be forgotten, and that the youth should be enlightened in this direction.
