On May 20, the meeting of the 7th General Assembly of the Turkic Universities Union (TURKUNIB) began its work under the chairmanship of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC).
Rectors of about 50 universities, representatives of science and education from Turkic countries took part in the international event.
At the opening of the event, the memory of the martyrs of the Turkic world was honored, and then a video dedicated to the event was shown.
The rector of UNEC, Professor Adalat Muradov, who delivered the opening speech, welcomed the participants and made a report on the work done by UNEC during the chairmanship of TURKUNIB. He said that the Road Map Project covering many events and projects in science, education and social fields for 2024-2025 was prepared and presented to the General Assembly of TURKUNIB. Professor Adalat Muradov spoke about the importance of holding discussions on the status of TURKUNIB before the Organization of Turkic States, financing of exchange programs, criteria for membership in TURKUNIB, creation of a permanent structure, as well as whether there is a need for joint action mechanisms in order to take advantage of the opportunities created by new technologies in science and education and to protect against possible threats. The rector said that in today’s meeting, the applications of 60 universities regarding membership will be considered and issues important for the future activity of the union will be discussed.
The Secretary General of the Organization of Turkic States, Kubanychbek Omuraliev, who participated in the General Assembly, greeted the participants and spoke about the work done by the organization and the tasks ahead: “The application of 60 new universities for membership in TURKUNIB shows the growing interest in the organization. Today we will discuss ways to further strengthen TURKUNIB. … The 8th meeting of education ministers of the Turkish states to be held in Shusha in June is of great importance in terms of accepting these proposals and further institutionalizing TURKUNIB,” said the general secretary.
Hasan Hasanli, Deputy Minister of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, spoke about the cooperation with the Turkic world countries in the field of science and education and the positive results achieved. He said that the decisions to be made in the Assembly will create a basis for further expansion and strengthening of this cooperation.
The President of the International Turkic Academy, Professor Shahin Mustafayev, expressed his satisfaction that the 7th Assembly of TURKUNIB has been held at UNEC, the country’s leading university. Sh. Mustafayev spoke about the successful cooperation of the leaders of the Turkic world states and said that this cooperation creates a fertile ground for the assimilation of science, education and common values among the countries of the Turkic world. He also said that it would be effective to establish a coordination center in TURKUNIB for the purpose of implementing the proposals. The president of ITA emphasized that the academy he leads will always support the development of this cooperation.
After the opening speeches, the General Assembly continued its work with discussions. At the meeting, discussions were held in the areas of harmonizing the science and education programs of TURKUNIB member universities, increasing the number of exchange programs, recognizing the equivalence of diplomas, etc. 60 universities that applied to TURKUNIB were accepted as members of the union, and thus the number of members was increased to 109.
