Ilyas Mehrali oglu Sultanov was born on March 18, 1957, in the Fuzuli district. From a young age, he practiced classical wrestling, winning titles at district and national championships multiple times. He graduated from the Khurshudbanu Natavan Secondary School in Fuzuli in 1974 and entered the Azerbaijan People’s Economy Institute (now UNEC) named after Dadash Bunyadzada. He served in the military in the Vladimir region of Moscow in 1976. After completing his studies, he began his professional career in the Fuzuli district consumer cooperative. Later, he served as the chairman of the Trade System Trade Union Organization of the Fuzuli district.
After Armenia’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan began, Ilyas became one of the first members of the self-defense battalion formed in Fuzuli district. He was appointed as the squad commander. He participated heroically in battles in the villages of Hogha, Gajar, Govshadli, and Yukharı Veysalli in the Fuzuli district. Ilyas heroically lost his life in the battle for the village of Yukharı Veysalli on August 15, 1992. He was buried in the Martyrs’ Alley in the Fuzuli district.
The secondary school in the village of Yukharı Veysalli in the Fuzuli district is named after Ilyas Sultanov.
