Andrea Liverani, the bank’s lead specialist, head economist Arvind Nair, UNEC rector, professor Adalat Muradov and the heads of relevant structures took part in the meeting initiated by the World Bank.
At the meeting held to support UNEC in the preparation of the World Bank’s report on Azerbaijan within the framework of the “Climate Change and Development” mission, Rector Adalat Muradov spoke about the university’s opportunities for cooperation in this direction. The rector spoke about UNEC’s goals in the direction of green energy and sustainable development, as well as specialist training in this field. He said that UNEC was included in prestigious international rankings related to renewable energy, was the winner of the environmental grant project under the Erasmus+ program, and projects related to ecology, green economy, and sustainable development were implemented at the Center for Sustainable Development and Green Economy named after Nizami Ganjavi.
The World Bank’s lead specialist Andrea Liverani and head economist Arvind Nair said that the bank’s report on Azerbaijan was prepared in the direction of climate change and sustainable development. They pointed out that the impact of climate change on economic development was analyzed in the report. They emphasized that cooperation with UNEC will be useful in this direction.
At the meeting, the vice-rector for international relations and programs Neman Muradli announced the current opportunities of UNEC in the direction of preparation and collection of national and regional databases.
Associate Professor Fariz Ahmadov, director of IMDC, said that more than 200 research works have been carried out by masters and doctoral students based on the order of state and private institutions related to climate change and ecological restoration of Karabakh. He noted that studies can be conducted according to the directions presented by the World Bank regarding environmental damage caused by Armenians in Karabakh.
Gulnar Mirzayeva, the head of the Center for Sustainable Development and Green Economy named after Nizami Ganjavi, informed about the 5 main activities of the center, the implemented measures and the work to be done within the framework of the Erasmus+ grant project won by UNEC.
Then, the parties discussed the possibilities of cooperation in the direction of achieving the climate and development goals of Azerbaijan. The creation of a regional research journal, training of specialists in the field of green energy and energy economy, climate change at the Social Business Center named after Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, as well as the ecological restoration of Karabakh and the implementation of green economy in territories freed from occupation were proposed.
