Our Eternal Student – Habil Azizov
Azerbaijan State University of Economics pays tribute to the martyrs of Black January….
In the midnight from January 19 to 20 1990 the soviet armed forces entered the Baku city and shot down the civilians. 138 persons were dead, 744 wounded and 841 were illegally arrested as a result of the incident.
Three students of the Azerbaijan State University of Economics were killed during the disaster.
Habil Azizov Kommunar was born on January 19 1968 in Vurghun village of Aghstafa region.
Habil’s mother Zinaya Azizova is speaking:
He is the third of my seven children. He was very clever boy. He never caused inconvenience. He was the best student; monitored the class. He entered the Institute of the National Economy named after D.Bunyadzade and went to serve in an army after a year. He served in Riga and returned back to the institute. He was a part-time student, and began to work in the sovkhoz office. It was a winter session during the incident, so Habil was in Baku. It was his birthday. He had visited his uncle’s after the exam. They celebrated his birthday at that moment. Suddenly Habil spoke about the situation in the city. He said that the situation was confused in the city, so I can’t celebrate here my birthday party. He invited hid friend Khanoghlan to the city. Uncle could do nothing to keep him at home.
Khanoghlan says that they were walking side by side when I fell down the drainage well; but he went ahead. Habil wasn’t killed by bullets; the tank went over my sweetheart.
His uncle was looking for him in all hospitals, morgues and mosques. His face was fully damaged; uncle recognized him by his closes…
– How were you informed?
– A telegram was sent to the post office. It said: Azizov Habil died. The telephones were out of order; we couldn’t connect to the city. His father immediately went away to Baku. There were a ticket to home, 17 manats, watch and handkerchief in his pockets; they give them to father. I keep these things and his copy-books up to date. He played a guitar very well. His guitar is at the martyrs’ museum of the region. His grave is also on the Martyrs’ Avenue of the region. His photo was put to the Martyrs’ Avenue in Baku. He always said that everyone would be proud of me in future. And I will die so that everyone would be proud of me. I give a commemorative feast not only for Habil but also for all our martyrs every year on January 20.
– Your grandson is now ASUE’s student…
– Yes, he is. My elder daughter’s son Farid Maharramli. He grew up and went to school in Russia. He always wanted to study at his uncle’s university. He is a freshman.
