The January 20 Tragedy and Heydar Aliyev’s Political Stance
An event titled “The January 20 Tragedy and Heydar Aliyev’s Political Stance” was held at the Territorial Party Organization located at Istiglaliyyat Street 6, jointly organized by the YAP Sabail District Organization and the Center for the Study of Heydar Aliyev’s Economic Legacy at UNEC.
The event commenced with a moment of reverence in honor of the memory of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the martyrs.
In his opening remarks, the Chairman of the Territorial Party Organization and Vice-Rector for Administrative and Organizational Affairs, Associate Professor Shaig Asgarov, emphasized that the January 20 tragedy represents a heroic chapter in the Azerbaijani people’s struggle for freedom and territorial integrity. He underlined that this tragic event did not diminish the spirit of resistance among the Azerbaijani people but instead further solidified their unity in the pursuit of national independence. Associate Professor Asgarov further noted that, despite residing in Moscow at the time, National Leader Heydar Aliyev expressed a resolute stance on these events on January 21, 1990. He brought to the attention of the participants that the great leader openly protested against the leadership of the USSR regarding the tragedy.
Subsequently, presentations highlighting the events of January 20 were delivered by esteemed scholars from UNEC. Professor Mahabbat Pashayeva, from the Department for the Organization of Teaching General Disciplines (Humanities Department), presented on the topic “Heydar Aliyev and the January 20 Events.” Professor Vakil Hasanov, Head of the Department, and Senior Lecturer Ibrahim Babayev, addressed the theme “The January 20 Tragedy as a Chronicle of Heroism in Our History.”
The event concluded with the screening of a video dedicated to the January 20 tragedy.
