QS regional director: “UNEC significantly improves its position”
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international analytical agency in the field of higher education, has announced the ranking of the world’s best universities by subject.
Azerbaijan is represented in the QS ranking by the educational programs of two universities of the country: the Azerbaijan University of Languages and the Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC).
UNEC was included among the 351-400 best universities in the world in the “Economics and Econometrics” program, as well as among the 501-550 best universities in the world under the “Social Sciences and Management” program.
Significantly improving its position in the subject ranking of “Economics and Econometrics”, UNEC rises to 351st-400th place, and this is evidenced primarily by the impressive dynamics of scientific productivity indicators in its profile subject, the number of citations per publication and the increase in the values calculated according to the Hirsh index.
UNEC is also ranked 501-550 in the broad subject area ranking of “Social Sciences and Management”.
In addition, for the first time, UNEC has risen to 186th place in the “Reputation among employers” in the “Social Sciences and Management” field ranking, taking the highest place according to individual indicators.

The increased participation of Azerbaijani universities in all ranks of our rankings is undoubtedly a gratifying event. It is important to note that in addition to the two universities included in the published rankings (Azerbaijan University of Languages and Azerbaijan State University of Economics), other leading universities of the country are also rapidly approaching the published positions in several disciplines and increasing their potential to enter them shortly. The main opportunities to advance further in the rankings include the development and implementation of internationalization strategies, strengthening participation in top-quartile scientific journals, and active participation in joint research projects with foreign partners.
These rankings reflect an independent comparative analysis of more than 16,400 higher education programs serving students across 55 disciplines and 5 broad subject categories at 1,500 universities in 95 countries and territories. The subject rankings are published annually and are part of the QS World University Rankings, which in 2023 received more than 60 million unique views and were mentioned approximately 124,000 times in media publications worldwide.
