A Moroccan Student: “Student Life at UNEC is Highly Dynamic”
Rayane Lokmane, a citizen of the Kingdom of Morocco, is currently pursuing his studies at the International School of Economics (ISE) at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics (UNEC). In an interview with UNEC News, he shared his insights regarding his academic experience, student life, and impressions of Azerbaijan.
– Rayane, what motivated you to choose Azerbaijan, and specifically UNEC, for your studies?
– While exploring higher education opportunities in Europe, Turkey, and Central Asia, I came across UNEC and discovered that it is regarded as the leading university in Azerbaijan according to international rankings. The availability of my desired program in English was a key factor in my decision. I thoroughly examined the educational opportunities and admission requirements, which I found to be highly suitable. I would like to note that the admission process for international students at UNEC is remarkably straightforward. After submitting my documents electronically, I participated in an online interview-introduction stage and was subsequently accepted as a UNEC student.
– What is your field of study, and what motivated you to choose this discipline?
– I am currently enrolled in the “Business Administration” program, taught in English, at the International School of Economics. My interest in business and economics has been strong since childhood. I have always been particularly curious about how businesses operate and grow in different countries. In the future, I aspire to build a career in international business and management.
– How has studying abroad, particularly in Azerbaijan, benefited you?
– Studying outside my home country has provided me with invaluable opportunities to expand my worldview. Residing and studying in Baku has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of cultural differences and develop a more open-minded perspective. Azerbaijan offers a unique blend of Western and Eastern cultures, which I find highly enriching. This exposure has helped me learn how to navigate diverse professional and social environments, which is essential for my future career aspirations.
– How would you describe student life at UNEC?
– Student life at UNEC is vibrant and multifaceted. The environment is highly dynamic, with opportunities to acquire new knowledge and participate in various social activities daily. The university offers numerous internship programs and exchange opportunities, which are particularly valuable for my academic and professional development.
– What aspects of studying at UNEC do you find most satisfying?
– What I appreciate most is the supportive relationship between faculty members and students, as well as the diverse teaching methods employed by the professors. Our instructors are always approachable and willing to address students’ questions. They utilize various techniques to make the learning process more engaging and comprehensible, while also providing personalized attention to each student. This approach greatly facilitates the learning process. Additionally, the dynamic atmosphere within my faculty allows me to balance academic pursuits with social engagement, which serves as a strong motivation for my personal and intellectual growth.
– How do you typically spend your leisure time?
– In my free time, I enjoy socializing with friends, engaging in sports, and exploring new places. One of my favorite pastimes is trying different cuisines and visiting diverse locations to gain cross-cultural experiences. Although balancing academic responsibilities with personal interests can sometimes be challenging, I strive to manage both effectively.
– Did you encounter any difficulties adapting to life in Baku?
– As it was my first experience living abroad for an extended period, I initially faced some challenges adjusting to a new environment. However, my proficiency in the Russian language significantly facilitated the adaptation process, allowing me to settle in quickly. Overall, it has been a rewarding experience.
– Are there any cultural similarities between Azerbaijan and Morocco?
– While Azerbaijan and Morocco share certain cultural similarities, there are also notable differences. For instance, both countries place great importance on family values and hospitality. Additionally, the use of fresh vegetables and a variety of spices is common in both cuisines. However, I have observed that people in Azerbaijan tend to be more open-minded and tolerant. The rich history and cultural heritage of Azerbaijan are particularly fascinating to me. I admire the country’s ability to seamlessly integrate tradition with modernity, reflecting a society that values both its cultural roots and progressive development.
