“Reading culture” project has been launched at UNEC as part of the event plan dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the great leader Heydar Aliyev.

MPs Etibar Aliyev, Fazil Mustafa, Nizami Jafarov, well-known public representatives of the country Professor Shahlar Askerov, Karim Tahirov, Rashad Majid, Elchin Shikhli, Gulu Maharramli, Seyran Sakhavat, Shahbaz Khuduoglu, Teymur Karimli, Agshin Yenisey, Kismat Rustamov participated in the event.

The rector of UNEC, Professor Adalat Muradov welcomed the guests and said that the meeting with the beloved and outstanding intellectuals of the country has a special place in the life of the university. The rector pointed out that within the “Year of Heydar Aliyev” events dedicated to the “Reading culture” will be held in the university in order to increase the interest of young people in reading and to form a reading culture. A.Muradov spoke about the importance of teaching the society to read books: “Today, the interest in books is decreasing in the society. It is the culture that develops the personalities that lead society forward. The university gives knowledge and science, but it does not train personality. “Today, in order to inculcate reading in generation Z, the taste and interest of that generation should be taken into account in the design and printing of books,” said the rector.

The rector said that UNEC has 5 libraries, one of which is 24/7, the book fund has increased by 7 percent in the last 4 years, the use of the traditional library has increased by 84 percent, the use of the electronic library by 47 percent, and the circulation of books has increased by 190 percent.

Adila Abdullayeva, director of the UNEC Library Information Center, made an interesting presentation about the reading statistics in the countries of the world and the benefits of reading. She also announced statistics on the use of UNEC libraries.

After the presentation, the director of the National Library, Karim Tahirov, spoke about the importance of promoting the high value given to books and libraries, as well as the importance of publishers taking into account the interests and demands of young people in book printing. He said that the support of universities and intellectuals is needed to conduct reading statistics across the country.

MP Etibar Mammadov noted that the culture of reading has a great influence on the development of young people as a comprehensive personality. He said that in addition to knowledge, inculcating the culture of reading and involving them in research is one of the main missions of universities. Emphasizing the importance of the action plan, the MP said that he donated 80 books from his personal library to the university.

The chairman of the Press Council, Rashad Majid, spoke about the benefits of reading in the direction of enriching people’s vocabulary, increasing their self-confidence, and developing speaking skills.

The well-known poet, writer, and prose translator Seyran Sakhavat spoke about the role of the family in instilling love for books. Speaking about the values that the book brings to people, the beloved poet completed the sanctity of the book with the thought “Returning to the book is returning to God.”

MP Nizami Jafarov said that every Azerbaijani youth should read the works of our genius poets N. Ganjavi, M. Fuzuli, and I. Nasimi. He pointed out that fundamental textbooks should be prepared in universities to increase students’ interest in textbooks.

MP Fazil Mustafa shared his personal experience of reading with the participants. He noted that universities have a great mission to promote the culture of reading and that such events should become a tradition.

Shahbaz Khuduoglu, the director of “Qanun” publishing house, pointed out that there are more representatives of the new “Z” generation among book buyers, and highly appreciated this trend. He spoke about the importance of bringing together representatives of the new generation of writers, composers, economists, and representatives of all fields, and conducting discussions.

Professor Shahlar Askerov spoke about the value of the great leader Heydar Aliyev in the book and shared his memories about it. Emphasizing the need for a technological approach in the formation of reading culture, the professor emphasized that 21st-century universities can contribute in this direction.

Speaking about the fact that there are 78 cultural languages in the world, the young poet Agshin Yenisey expressed his concern that if there is no return to the book, the Azerbaijani language will remain at the stage of oral languages. A. Yenisey stated that the identity of the writer and the reader is one of the important factors and emphasized the importance of teaching the readers to look at the world through books.
