The WTO official: Useful discussions have been made in UNEC on Azerbaijan’s accession

Azerbaijan State Economic University (UNEC) hosted an event dedicated to the topic of “Support for the Azerbaijan’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and trade policy”.

Dr. Maarten, the head of the WTO Technical Assistance and Coordination Department and the professor-teaching staff of the university attended the event organized by the Department of International Cooperation of UNEC.

 Director of the UNEC International Cooperation Department, Sennur Aliyev said that seminars and roundtables were organized and discussions were held at the university with the participation of representatives of state institutions and Maarten Smeets to support Azerbaijan’s   accession to the WTO and trade policy.

Expressing satisfaction with being in UNEC, Dr. Maarten Smeets   noted that very effective business meetings were held within 3 days at the university. He regarded the discussions, as well as the meeting with the professor-teaching staff of the university as a positive step towards accelerating Azerbaijan’s WTO membership.

Stating that Azerbaijan has applied for membership in the organization since 1997, the reporter noted that successful bilateral and multilateral talks on the accession process were successfully continued, as well as works were carried out to harmonize national legislation with the requirements of the WTO agreements. The official said the WTO was interested in cooperating with Azerbaijan.

Answering questions of professors and teachers about the importance of WTO accession, the guest stated that this cooperation promotes to establish closer trade relations with the world countries, to access to new markets, to liberalize the domestic market, to enhance product competitiveness, and join a global value chain, attract foreign investment and other positive economic factors.

It should be noted that within three days representatives of Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Taxes, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Communication and High Technologies, Financial Market Control Chamber,  Central Bank, State Customs Committee and other state bodies attended international seminars.
