FOREIGN LANGUAGES
About the department
Considering the need to increase the quality of teaching foreign languages at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, in order to ensure the implementation of the decision of the Scientific Council of UNEC dated 14.07.2023 SC 188 on the establishment of the Department of Foreign Languages, the chair of Foreign Languages has been abolished since 06.09.2023 and “Department of Foreign Languages” was established as an independent structural unit on its basis.
The following structural divisions have been established within the Department of Foreign Languages:
– “Centre for teaching Foreign Languages “;
– “Centre for assessing the knowledge of foreign language learners”
– “UNEC Language Centre”;
– “Translation centre”.
Aysel Khalilova, assistant professor of the “Centre for teaching Foreign Languages”, has been appointed as the director of the Foreign Languages Department, keeping the position of a part-time assistant professor of the Centre for Foreign Language Teaching since 06.09.2023.
Foreign languages have been taught as a subject since the first days of the establishment of University of Economics. For a long time, foreign languages were concentrated in the “Languages” department together with other languages. Since 1959, it has been in the “Foreign Languages” department. In 1966, after the restoration of the Azerbaijan Institute of National Economy as an independent higher education institution, the “Foreign Languages” department was established. In 2001, the “Foreign Languages” department was divided into two parts. In different years, the head teacher S.A. Misirkhanova (1966-1976), Associate professor. N.A. Alekbarova (1976-1986), Assoc. Professor F.D. Alimirzayeva (1987-2000), Candidate of Philological Sciences, Assoc. Professor N.H. Nabiyev led the chair.
English, French, German, and Russian languages are taught in the foreign language teaching centre. Co-workers of the centre have developed and published many teaching materials, additional materials, recommendations, and programs for the taught subjects. To further improve the teaching of foreign languages, presentations on almost all topics were prepared and made available to teachers for interactive teaching on English and French.
“Centre for Foreign Language Teaching” organizes the foreign language subject at UNEC on four skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking).
In different years Centre for Foreign Language Teaching (former the Chair of Foreign Languages) was headed by head teacher S.A. Misirkhanova (1966-1976), Associate professor N.A. Alekbarova (1976-1986), Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor F. Mustafayeva-Alimirzayeva (1987-2001), prof. A. Abbasova (2001-2023).
” Centre for assessing the knowledge of foreign language learners “ assess students in 4 skills during the exam at UNEC.
“UNEC Language Centre” (ULC) organizes preparatory courses in various languages at UNEC. The UNEC Language Centre started operating within the Azerbaijan State University of Economics on October 7, 2022. Our lessons are focused on the development of 4 language skills (writing, reading, listening, and speaking). Teaching is conducted by the teachers who have got CELTA, TEFL, and international Aptis C certificates given by the British council and the teachers with the IELTs results of 8.5 and 8.0.
ULC is the official IELTS test partner of the British Council.
“Translation Centre” The Translation Centre which was established in 2016 is an institution that ensures the further improvement of teaching work at the Azerbaijan State University of Economics, provides teaching with economic literature that will meet the requirements of the new, modern era, supports various fields of science, education, culture and economy at the university, and implements projects that serve the development of these fields.
